Janie, Doug Display Ample Qualifications For Student Leadership at Maine West

"I ‑ oo ‑ ni, I ‑ oo ‑ ni, Ki ‑ oo ‑ ni." It's that number one perky, peppy, picture of pleasantness, Janie Lewis, Maine West's student council secretary. Don't let her size fool you though. Like they say, "good things come in small packages," and Janie is well qualified for the job of secretary. She has served three years on council, last year serving as public relations committee chairman.

Treasurer of French club her sophomore year, a Sunday school teacher at her church, a Girls' club representative her junior year and a gym leader, Janie has gained much of the experience she'll need for executive leadership. Janie received a Brotherhood award her sophomore year, which enabled her to hold the office of Brotherhood society secretary last year.

After a recent trip to a few of the colleges in the Middle West, Janie is seriously considering attending Parsons college, in Fairfield, Iowa, where she hopes to major in elementary education. "I'd like to teach kindergarten, first, or second grades," stated Janie. "That way I'll feel superior to my pupils."

Janie has many pastimes including sewing, studying with one ear glued to the hair dryer, and organizing "come‑as‑you‑are" parties. For a long time Janie wanted to have a pet, but her parents would never consent. One day, Janie came home with a big "Harry" dog. Her parents didn't object though so he's still following her around.

Looking toward the future, Janie hopes to help strengthen council and tighten the gap between council and the student body. She hopes that everyone will cooperate and take an active part on as many school activities as possible.

Janie's advice to the students at Maine West and particularly to incoming freshmen is, 'Try to have as much fun as possible, but always have your future in mind. Four years can go awfully fast. Don't let those years slip away."

"I can honestly say that this is the happiest day of my whole life.''

Do you recognize these words? They are taken from the acceptance speech made by Doug Wright at the election jitney last spring, when he learned he would be president of this year's student council.

Doug admits to never being contented with anything second rate or second best. The top is the only thing that will satisfy him. This is certainly to be counted as an asset in a council president, especially at a new school.

Three year's council service at Maine are also to be included in his more than ample list of qualifications for his present office.

In Doug's junior year, he acted as bailiff on the traffic court. In addition to council and other school activities, Doug participates in the activities of his church and the youth group sponsored by it. Of course, seriousness is not the only adjective that could be used to describe your president. He does seem to have a certain weakness for parties, open houses, etc.

After being graduated from Maine West, Doug hopes to obtain an appointment to the Air Force Academy. Plans for the future also include becoming a commercial pilot flying jet airplanes.
