College Corner
State University Presents Outstanding
Large School

In following issues of the Westerner staff writers w ill bring information to Maine West students on various colleges and universities. Material on scholarships and reasons for attending college will be presented. A poll will be taken in junior and senior homerooms soon and the next 14 issues will present information on the most popular schools.

One of the outstanding large schools in the area is the University of Illinois. At the downstate campus there is an enrollment of 18,514 men and 5,861 women. (Girls, take note) Tuition is $150 for state residents, but the expense of dorms and dining halls runs about $1,600 per academic year. Cooperative housing units offer room and board for $60 a m o n t h, while residence halls charge $730 to $820 per year.

To obtain a scholarship to the U. of I., a student fills out an application which is submitted to the Maine Mother's club. The pupils' dean makes the final decision based on the grades achieved on tests given in March by the county superintendent. Students achieving the highest grades on the tests are chosen to receive the funds. State scholarships of $600 are also available and may be used at any state university or college. Information is given in local papers during the year as to where and when they may be taken.

Information on other scholarships, such as for those of World War II veterans' children, may be had by inquiring for a catalog from the university.

Illinois has 58 national fraternities and 38 national sororities.
