School Fit 'Physically'

Up‑to‑date sports facilities for both boys' and girls' athletics are now, or soon will be, available to all Maine West students In its efforts to provide a complete physical education program for students, Maine West has incorporated many features into the program which are not available in many schools.

The new school will feature two separate swimming pools. One pool will serve as an instructional pool and is made shallower for that purpose. The other pool will be utilized for diving and swimming meets.

A complete gymnasium is found in each of the three academic wings and will be used for a wide variety of indoor sports. The gyms, each of which measures 100 x 80 feet, will be the scene of basketball, volleyball, apparatus, and various other sports and activities.

An indoor track, beneath the cafeteria, will be used for all the indoor track events except the pole vault and shot put. The track is set up to have 14 laps to the mile and include a 50 yard straightaway.

There will be several other rooms in the physical education department including a therapy room, with diathermy and a whirlpool, and three small game rooms in the basement for weight lifting, tumbling, meetings, and other activities of the gym classes.
