Breaking 30 years of tradition, both Maine and Maine West closed down last Wednesday due to the heavy snowstorm.
Mr. R. J. Frost, principal, arrived early that morning and found the buses were not running, telephone lines were damaged, and many teachers and. several members of the administration were snow‑bound. After discussing the matter with Superintendent Earl Wiltse, the decision was made that school would close for the day.

Maine was closed the first time for a whole day in February of 1930. This was just after the school had changed during mid‑terms from Thacker, the original high school, to the new building at Dempster and Potter roads.
Due to the bomb scare in the fall of 1958, school was closed after first period had begun. Because of the shifts, however, many students didn't have to attend school at all that day.
The WESTERNER staff wishes to express sympathy to all students still suffering from aching backs due to their unexpected vacation and especially to those who had to miss a day of school.
