To a Freshman:
As you enter high school, you have many difficult decisions to make. These include choice of subjects, friends, and activities. Each one of these is an important and pertinent choice, and you must consider each in its individual perspective.
When I look back at my four years at Maine, and now Maine West, I am able to see my mistakes more clearly. My largest diversion from correctness was my choice of extra‑curricular activities. I was never particularly active in my first two years. I found myself lost in the last two years trying to make up for the first.

Choice of curriculum is important scholastically. To succeed you must take plenty of mathematics, science, and language, for it is impossible to get ahead in your field without a proper foundation.
Companions are equally important. You will be guided by your friends, so choose your friendships from among persons of at least equal and more probably higher intelligence. Some of these friends will stay with you for the remainder of your life and they must be true.
Listen to advice judiciously from anyone who offers it, but be certain to include your parents in any future plans.
