MW Matmen Vie In State

State wrestling sectionals are being held this weekend at DeKalb. The meets start Friday evening and will last until Saturday night with the finals. The top two boys in each weight class then compete for the state title against other Sectional champs.

Friday, February 12, was the start of the District meets at Palatine. The entire West team competed in the preliminaries. Bob Jonas, 95 lbs., started out with a quick pin to secure himself a placing, then pinned another opponent later that night. At 103 lbs., Tom Carlin won by a decision. Dan Hansen was pinned by the boy who finally took second at 112 lbs. Gil Caudill faced last year's District and Sectional champ and was pinned.

Bill Henning took an easy win over Maine East, also winning again later. At 133 lbs., Paul Cornog lost by a decision. Chuck Novak lost to the boy who went on to win the title at 138 lbs. Shark Giesler lost at 145 lbs; and Mike Kunkle lost at 154 lbs. Bob Nemeth lost at 165 lbs. as did Ray Boyd at 180 lbs.

Wild Bill Spyrison's match was the feature of the night. At 10 minutes after midnight, Bill walked away with his match by a comfortable margin.
