The pride of the varsity gymnastics team. Who is that? Why none other than Dick Sass, captain of this year's gymnastics team.
As a junior last year, Dick placed ninth in the state on all-around ability and seventh in the state on the high bar. This year he is hoping to better this fine mark. Rather he is hoping not only to better last year's show but to win the state title in the individual competition. Dick is very optimistic about his chances for state when he says things "look quite promising."
A sore spot with Dick is the fact that hardly anybody comes to the gymnastic meets. He knows that Maine West does not play up gymnastics as much as other sports but thinks that once you come to a meet, you will enjoy it.

Only a few of Dick's friends know that he is a junior pilot. Dick has been taking flying lessons since last September and now is allowed to fly solo. He has his junior pilot's license.
Dick started gymnastics when he came to high school, and by the time he was a sophomore he was doing tricks which amazed the seniors. He received his letter when he was a sophomore and was elected treasurer of M‑club this year.
When asked what he though of gymnastics in the future, Dick reported, "With Mr. Drain as head coach of the gymnastics team, Maine West will show great improvement in the very near future."
Dick enjoys gymnastics very much and plans to continue with the sport in college. He is undecided about where he will go to school but is thinking seriously about attending Southern Illinois university.
