Prospect Wallops Cagers in Regional, 67-47
Run Out Of Steam After Trouncing Niles 69-47

After advancing to the semifinal round of the Palatine Regional by virtue of their 69‑47 win over Niles last Monday, the Warriors were routed by Prospect's Knights, 67‑47, Wednesday to end their 1960 cage season.

The loss marked the Warriors' third defeat by the Knights; the previous losses coming by margins of only two and five points respectively. The Knights' record, one of the finest in the state, now stands at 21‑1, their only loss a one pointer to East Leyden.

One encouraging factor of the Warriors' game with Prospect was the tremendously improved free‑throw percentage. The Warriors hit 17 out of 22 from the charity stripe for a .773 clip. The free‑throws proved to be not enough as Prospect began to pull away in the second quarter and were never again really threatened. The score was held deadlocked at 11‑11 in the first quarter but the second quarter saw Prospect jump to a five point lead, 17‑12.

Prospect stretched its lead to 11 points in the third frame and picked up nine more in the fourth. The quarter scoring of 11‑11, 17‑12, 19‑13, and 20‑11, shows the way in which Prospect picked up speed in the game to come roaring through with a 20‑point win. Prospect's scores seemed to come on either tremendously long jump‑shots or Knights penetrated Maine West's simple layups which were the result of the fine way the Knights penetrated Maine West's defense.

The Knights' fantastically balanced scoring combined with their pressing defense to give the Warriors an extremely tough time. Four Prospect starters scored in double‑figures headed by Empkie with 17, and followed by Pomey with 16, Zadel with 15, and Lussow with 13.

For Maine West, the scoring was far from balanced, George Verber headed the list with 17, followed by Chuck Reid with 15.

Coach Freeman, in his search to find a replacement for Bob Kunkel, who was able to see only limited action because of a bone bruise, again scoured his junior ranks and found Mike Rowlee. Rowlee had earned the starting post as a result of his fine game against Niles in the first game of the Regional.

The Niles game was a far cry from the Prospect encounter as the Warriors piled up a 22‑point win, 69‑47. Scoring was led by Verber with 22 and Keith Connelly with 16. West's defense which was noticeably lacking against Prospect showed up well against Niles as the Warriors held the Trojans well in check throughout the game.
