There is a theory that criticism never hurt anyone. This is very true, but it is also true that unsavory propaganda does hurt and sometimes it may permanently ruin a person's reputation or the reputation of a group. This past year many individuals, organizations and school institutions have been criticized to the point of unsavory propaganda. No one can judge to what extent this criticism was true, and probably a lot of it was constructive, but it has been blown clear out of all sensible proportions.
It is natural instinct to take a negative attitude toward something one knows little about, and this is probably one of the basic causes of the severe criticism the Student Council of our school has received. It is also natural to find fault with something done by a person in a responsible position, and to listen to what other people say before one has found out the facts for himself. It is one thing to want to be informed and to keep up with student affairs, but it is something entirely different to complain incessantly about student affairs without taking the time to "get informed."

It is obvious that none of this is too healthy for the growth of Maine West and her traditions. Being the first year, many good and bad examples will be set for future years. Wholesome competition is good for a growing school. Competition, when used just to oppose something for personal or self‑centered reasons, is wrong.
There is a solution. Start taking the positive attitude. When something is being attacked or criticized, think of a good point to praise. Working together instead of competing is another way of taking the positive attitude. There is one word that wraps up this whole idea of positive thinking and doing. It is a good word to remember for, whenever a situation arises involving unfounded criticism, jealous competition, or unsavory propaganda, it offers a quick painless way out. The word ‑ cooperation.
