"Of all the boys on the track team, I think that senior John Charles is the hardest worker." This was a comment made by head track coach Minerick when asked who he thought was the most deserving boy for Warrior of the West.
John is the number one shotputter on this year's edition of Maine West's varsity track team. Last year John was an unknown member of the squad as a junior but this year he has rocketed to fame by winning most of the events which he entered. This complete change was due to a tremendous effort put forth by John in order to be a success this year and help the cindermen end the season with a victorious record. "I love to work hard because then when I accomplish something I feel that I deserved it. I know that I am not a natural athlete and therefore must work hard," says John.
He believes that his practice schedule is limited because of the low ceiling. It is also considered dangerous for him to throw the shot down in the "pit," because of the "fog." The other trackmen wouldn't be able to see the shot flying through the air. When he is unable to find a place to practice, John may be found in the weight lifting room building up those already well‑developed muscles.
