Diamondmen To Challenge Mustangs
In Season Inaugural

Scheduled to open yesterday against Evanston at home, Maine West's varsity baseball team will see this game rescheduled for later in the season. This is the first time in eight years that a Maine opening game has had to be set back due to the weather, according to coach Al Carstens. The team will see action tonight at Morton.

The diamond nine will play on the Wolf Road field, and has nine home games scheduled. The team has currently been working indoors, but will try to get outside as soon as possible. "We're coming along as well as can be expected," elaborated coach Carstens, "due to the adverse weather conditions."

Leading the team are three returning lettermen, in the form of seniors George Verber, Bob Kunkel, and Ed Swanson. Verber and Swanson play the outfield, and Kunkel leads the pitching staff, a big factor in this year's team. Beside Kunkel, pitchers Jack Kern, Dick Shoppe, Dick Smith, Dave Stenmark, and Bill Tookey are ready for varsity action.

A 17‑game schedule awaits the Warrior diamond nine, not including State play, a big objective which the Warriors are shooting for. According to assistant coach Gaston Freeman, "the team looks great," and he is supported by junior manager Bob Williams, who said that it "looks like we've got a great team here." The Warriors will be facing a rough schedule, playing Oak Park, Niles, and Elgin, among others. Next on the schedule, besides the Evanston and Morton games, is a contest against Prospect at home on April 5, a Tuesday. The Warriors will also play Notre Dame on Thursday of next week.
