Westerner Announces SC Winners
Hectic Campaign Climaxed By Student Balloting, Jitney

Climaxing a hectic week of campaigning, speeches, and sleepless nights, ballots were cast this morning in homeroom for the president and secretary of next year's Student Council. The election assemblies were held first and second periods yesterday for freshmen and sophomores and seventh and eighth periods for juniors and seniors.

Maine West's first election assemblies, under the direction of Organizations Committee co-chairmen Karen Fischer and Bruce Schellin, were highlighted by the skits and speeches of the candidates and their campaign managers.

Candidates for the secretarial position were Karen Barrett and Carrie Perez, while Andy Adolfson, John Hanck, and Dan Wiberg vied for the office of president. Their campaign managers were respectively Trudy Johnson, Larry Horn, Nemo Shayne, Chuck Reid, and Jerry Mohr.

Miss Buck, Student Council sponsor, declared, "Our first election week has been a successful one. It's been hard work for everybody concerned, but it was worth it. I'm sure that everyone who participated had a lot of fun and met many new people. Election week is an experience that none of the candidates, whether they won or lost, will ever forget."

Doug Wright, the president of this year's Student Council, was pleased with the outcome of the election. "I know that your new president will do a fine job," he remarked. "I've seen the excellent work he's done on Council, and his leadership qualities will enable him to head your student government successfully next year."

Janie Lewis, the present Council secretary, also approved of her successor. She commented that the new secretary's efficiency, willingness to work, and ability to get along with people will all help her to be a competent Student Council secretary.

Both winners were surprised and pleased when informed of their victory. "I will certainly work hard to live up to the expectations of those who voted for me," the newly elected president promised.. The secretary added that she would cooperate with the president to maintain an efficient and effective Student Council and to promote unity in the school.

Both new officers expressed their thanks to all those who worked so hard to help them win.
