Five Science Students Enter State Project Contest

Art Behn, Steve Priest, George Rippen, Michael Robbins, and John Schafer, Maine Wests' future scientists, took their winning projects to the Illinois Junior Academy of science state project contest at the University of Illinois, Urbana this weekend.

Art Behn and Steve Priest, biology students of Mr. LeRoy Scott, entered a joint project entitled "Growth in Plants." They have been studying the effects of growth hormones on corn, roses, and primroses. Art and Steve have produced a seven minute time‑lapse motion picture showing the different stages of development in these plants.

George Rippen, a science major at Maine West, entered his 1960 project entitled "Sferics in Weather Forecasting." His project is a combination radio and counter device which enables the weatherman to identify and measure accurately the strength of approaching thunderstorms.

"Clock Through the Ages" is the title of Michael Robbins' project. He has attempted to reconstruct pieces of equipment to depict the various methods of measuring time from past to the present. All of the clocks were made from materials found around the house.

John Schafer built a photographic kymograph under the direction of Mrs. Jeanine Jekel. This device is a very sensitive instrument used for measuring the heart beat of small animals.
