Westerner chooses Five Top Warrior Athletes
Top Stars Selected

"Rapid" Robert Kunkel, is a perfect name to call this handsome six foot senior. Bob hasn't been in gym for three of his four years at Maine because of his part in football, basketball and baseball for four years. He has earned three sets of numerals and received his letter last year as pitcher on the state championship baseball team.

Few will contest this talented senior's right to be called one of Maine West's top athletes. Besides being the runaway high scorer on the Warrior cage crew, George Verber is currently leading Maine West's batters with a sizzling - percentage.

This dark-haired senior averaged about 22 points a game during the basketball season under Coach Gaston Freeman, and he is now sparking the baseball nine under Coach Al Carstens.

George's job was pincher on the basketball team, and he is currently the center fielder on the baseball team. One of the all-time high points of George's career was being chosen AllState center fielder on Maine's baseball team which brought a second consecutive state title to the Demons last year.

Bill Henning, lettering in wrestling during his sophomore year and in tennis last year, has been an asset to both teams. When entering Maine in his freshman year, Bill immediately took to the great facilities offered in sports and went out for wrestling. In spite of his size and weight, he wrestled in the 95 lbs. weight class on the frosh-soph team and earned his numerals. In his sophomore year he wrestled in the 103-lb. class on the Varsity squad. He earned his letter at this time. In his junior year he moved up to the 120 lb. weight class, and this year Bill wrestled in the 127-lb. class.

All-Stater Doug Schmidt considers himself "just an average American boy who enjoys life." Doug, who earned all-state honors this past year as an end on the undefeated football team, has been offered numerous scholarships. Doug, however has found that school is not only for athletics. He has carried a B average and is an avid jazz fan. When football season ends, Doug exchanges his football garb for a basketball uniform. Although Doug is quite large, 6'2", 208 lbs., he is very agile.

Not content with being a standout performer in only one sport, Bill Spyrison has made himself a valuable member of two of Maine West's varsity teams.

Bill is one of the mighty linemen who helped Maine's football team sparkle throughout an undefeated season this year. When the football season was over, and the team was the proud possessor of the conference title and an undefeated season, Bill immediately went out for the wrestling squad and distinguished himself as the school's top heavyweight grappler. As well as taking most of his matches in regularly scheduled team competition, Bill also showed to good advantage in the state meet.

Bill plans to attend Western Illinois university in the fall and continue his wrestling career.
