Activities Await All

By Mary Ann Normark

A well rounded personality is needed by the high school graduate as he enters the turbulent sea of life. One of the best means of developing poise during a person's scholastic career is entry into the activity program offered at Maine West.

In such a program one learns not only mastery of many valuable academic skills, but also the ability to live and work with fellow students. Many of his best friends will be made within the association of school activities.

The student, however, should not overdo participation just to have his name and picture identified with many clubs and teams in the yearbook. If a person is going to join a club, he should work as diligently as time permits to make a success of his endeavor. A drawback in over indulgence in activities is that grades might be sacrificed. In choosing an activity a person must decide which club or team will do him the most good and still be enjoyable.

Perhaps the best chance to show ability as a writer is offered in school publications. Maine West published the WESTERNER, the yearbook the LEGEND, and the creative writing magazine.

For student participation Maine also offers a mathematics club, a debate club, and diversified types of science and language clubs. Here the deeper mysteries of the special subjects are discovered and analyzed. This learning leads to a better understanding and use of the subject, and can, as a result, be of great value to the student in competitive scholarship examinations.

At Maine West there is a wide assortment of activities providing a place for everyone. No student should go through school with a purely academic program. If he doesn't participate in activities, the student is missing one of the finest parts of high school life.
