4 Frosh, 2 Sophs Named To Cheerleading Squad

Freshman Barbara Cutaia, Barbara Georgans, Shirley Helms, Nancy Merritt, and sophomores Marilyn Alfini and Sandy Mustradi were selected from 12 girls in the cheerleading finals held September 16 to represent West Maine's frosh‑soph squad. Eighteen girls entered the preliminaries that were conducted on September 14. Twelve ended as finalists in the competition.

Marilyn, newly elected captain, related, "I didn't think I'd make it. I screamed when the telephone rang. I think I'm the happiest girl in the world."

The judges were Sue Eagleson, captain of the varsity squad; Doug Wright, president of student council; Joe Byers, president of Boys' club; Tim Byram, member of M‑club, Sandy Assitor, vice‑president of Pep club; Miss Bullus, Miss Wahlhiem, and Miss Clark, who is faculty sponsor of the cheerleaders.

Contestants were judged on their pep, co‑ordination, "cheer personality, personal reactions, and how they would look as ideal representatives of Maine." The girls were graded in each category and given points rang. jug from one to five, five being excellent; four, good; three, average; two, fair; and one, poor.

"I was never so happy and I cried because nothing like this ever happened to me before," divulged Sandy.

Nancy admitted being "excited and surprised. With so much competition," she added, "I didn't think I'd make it."
