Evanston Eleven Downed By Spirited Maine Squad

Maine's varsity eleven did what hasn't been done by any other Demon football team. They defeated the Wildkits from Evanston by a score of 7‑0.

Senior tailback Bob Kunkel plunged off tackle from the 1 yard line in the second quarter for the only touchdown of the contest. Maine received the opening kickoff but could not get a substantial drive under way, and was forced to punt. The ball was whistled dead on the Evanston 28, Evanston, taking the ball for the first time, started moving. Stephen Gehlback, calling shots for the Kits, relied on halfback Tom Harmon twice as he moved the ball to the 37. After gaining a first down, Evanston was penalized back to their own 27 for illegal use of hands. An off sides penalty against Maine then moved the ball up to the 32. From this point, Gehlback faded and threw to halfback Stevens on Maine's 35. Maine, however, turned on the pressure and forced them back to the

40 from where they punted to the Demon's six. Maine, held powerless, quickkicked a third down to the Evanston 44.

After exchanging punts, Chuck Reid grabbed one of Evanston's quick‑kicks and returned it to the Evanston 30. Junior halfback Dave Hamman slid off tackle on the first play to the 22. Bob Kunkel then fired to end Doug Schmidt at the six. John McSwaney grabbed another of Kunkel's tosses at the one from which Kunkel proceded to score. Bill Wagner then converted to make the score 7‑0 with about a minute remaining in the first half.

The second half saw the defenses of both teams stand out as neither team could get a good drive under way until the Demons pushed to the Evanston 1. They were halted, however, when one of Kunkel's passes was snatched out of the air by Evanston's Jim Purnell.
