The city of Madison, population 112,270 in 1955, built around four lakes and laced with parks, is the home of the University of Wisconsin. Wisconsin's campus offers the opportunity for one to share in "the good life" at Madison while attending the university.
In addition, approved houses of special interest include La Maison Francaise, open all year for French‑speaking students, and the Spanish corridor, open for the summer sessions for those interested in Spanish. Anderson house and Tabard inn for women and Babcock co‑operative for men students in the college of Agriculture offer economical living through group cooperation.
With three basic colleges, five professional schools and 86 departments, the University of Wisconsin opens the door to almost every major field of study with the opportunity for advanced work in the field of one's choice.

In addition, the graduate school offers opportunity for advanced work toward master's and doctor's degrees; summer sessions offer academic and professional subjects for credit toward all degrees. Two campuses, at Madison and the University of Wisconsin‑Milwaukee, are extended to the boundaries of the state and beyond by extention center programs, correspondence courses, special classes, institutes, and other activities by the Extension Division.
Annual costs at the University of Wisconsin for non‑residents are as follows: tuition, about $550; room and board in good accomodations, $750 to $900 per year; books and supplies for the normal course, $50 to $60; laundry and cleaning, $25 to $30; local transportation, $15 to $25; and activities and recreation, $100 to $150. The total thus ranges from $1140 to $1715 for the 38 weeks of the academic year, not including trips home.
