Laboratory Prepared For Fall Opening
The language laboratory, newest addition to Maine West's achievements, will be opened sometime this fall. Located in Room A-213, the laboratory will be divided into many small booths, each containing a series of RCA electronic recording equipment to aid in the study of various modern languages.

A recorder, ear phones, and a microphone will be at the dis posal of the student so that he may hear various recorded ma terial, as well as his own voice played back. Students may not listen to each other,, but the teacher in charge will be able to listen in on anyone without their knowing. Different tapes will be used for various types of students fast, medium, or slow. In this way, difficulties in speech will be solved accordingly.
Last Wednesday, October 7, six foreign language teachers from West began a 10-week course at Mundelein college in Chicago on the use of the new equipment and facilities. Mr. William Barringer, spanish; Mr. Gustave Carlson, Russian; Miss Elsie Ekstrom, German; Mr. Daniel Holbrook, French and. department chairman; Mr. Robert Meute, French; and Mr. Arthur Piana, Spanish are the teachers who will attend.

"One of the main difficulties a student has in learning a foreign language," related Mr. Holbrook, "is speaking out in class because of the fear that other students will laugh. We hope this new system will over-come this block and provide an increase in language fluency."
