Maine's varsity thinclads opened their running season by winning two conference meets, 18‑48 and 17‑65, and dropping a close one, 24.31, to Evanston of the powerful Suburban league.
Unbeaten junior Jack Kragie led the way against Hinsdale on their course in a decisive win with a time of 10:53. Lee Johnson followed a close second, (10:54); Frank Schwartz, (11:05); Dave Sullivan, (11:06); Wally Boerger, (11:07); and John Jurco, (11:09) swept fourth through seventh for the Harriers. Stu Shakman held ninth, while Jerry Romes, John Garver, Paul Eisenbacher, and Bill Russell combined to hold Hinsdale's fifth pointman to a 16 place finish.

Jack Kragie also took first at home against Evanston, with a time of 10:09.5. Lee Johnson placed third with 10:11. Dave Sullivan took eighth for Maine with 10:23, and John Jurco and Frank Schwartz held ninth and tenth while Maine was edged 24‑31, as 62 runners passed through the chute.
Against York at home, Jack Kragie again took first, with a time of 10:08.9 as Maine won, 17‑65. John Jurco (10:09) and Lee Johnson (10:10) took second and third, respectively, for Maine. Dave Sullivan (10:12) and Frank Schwaitz (10:18) took fifth and sixth. Wally Boerger and Jerry Romes took eighth and ninth. York's fifth point‑man finished 23.
