Demons Roll Over Weak York Eleven

Maine's fighting Demons rolled over York last Friday night at the Maine field, 25‑0. This was Maine's second conference victory in as many games and put them in a three‑way tie for first place with Arlington Heights and Riverside‑Brookfield.

Junior halfback Keith Connelly scored twice for Maine, with the other touchdowns being donated by senior Ed Swanson and another by junior Dave Hamman.

Maine recovered the opening kickoff on the York 45‑yard line after an onsides kick by Doug Schmidt. A few minutes later Connely went into the end zone from the 9 after Ed Swanson and Bill Peterson had combined their running ability and moved the ball into scoring position. Wagner's extra point attempt was wide.

Later in the first period, Dave Hamman scampered 70 yards for the Demon's second touchlongest run Maine has recorded down of the night. This was the so far this season. Bill Wegner's attempted conversion split the uprights to make the score 13 to 0. This was the score as the gun went off to end the first quarter of play.

Maine was able to score only once in the second quarter. This touchdown came on a two yard plunge up the middle by Connelly. Bill Wagner's attempt for the extra point was blocked. York, unable to get a substantial drive underway, failed to score and had to settle for a 19 to 0 halftime total.

The third quarter was not different from the others with Maine having possession of the ball most of the time. After moving up to the York 18‑yard line, Bob Kunkel fired a pass up to John McSwaney at the 13. Ed Swanson then drove up to the York 7. From this point Swanson bulled over for the touchdown. Chuck Reid's try for the extra point was wide.

In the fourth quarter neither team was able to move the ball consistently until Maine's Dave Hamman broke loose at the Maine 48. He dashed 50 yards to the York two yard line before he was hauled down from behind with only 40 seconds remaining on the clock. Maine was able to try only one play before the final gun and was unable to score.
