Social Science Plans

Visiting Dunning State Hospital and the Cook County jail are among the long range plans of the Social Science club at Maine West, according to Mr. Eric Edstrom, club sponsor and social science teacher. Mr. Edstrom also stated that "the general purpose of this club is an enlargement of the social science program at Maine West.

The club meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month, and dues are 50 cents yearly. At present there is a membership of 58 girls and four boys.

Under president Linda Thomas, vice-president Fred Kerns, secretary Barbara Strasser, and treasurer Sharon Blume, the club also plans later in the year to feature a guest speaker from a Latin American country, through the courtesy of Northwestern University.

According to the local Social Science club recruiter, Mr. Edstrom, new members are always welcome in the club.

Latin Club Meets

A trip to the underworld is scheduled for the next meeting of the Latin club to be held on October 29. "The Forum," as it is known officially, appointed as chairman of the nominating committee Alice Rasmussen. The following officers were presented: Jim Barca, Consul (president); Aedile (vice‑president) Donna Cadwallader; Praetor Quaestor (secretary-treasurer) Kathie Neumann.

New members had to perform the labors of Hercules as part of their initiation into the club. After this part, they signed their names to the scroll.

Refreshments were furnished by the co‑sponsors, Mrs. Valrie Hackett and Alice Rasmussen.

Science‑Fiction Club Started

Although Science‑Fiction club is relatively new (started second semester last year) its membership has grown and it is now firmly established. Joe Mitchell, president, promises that this will be of interest to the club members as well as the student body. Other officers are Scott Ross, vice‑president; and Bill Sopper, secretary‑treasurer. History teacher Mr. Kenneth Lindquist is sponsor.

"Purpose of the club," informs Joe, "is to promote better science‑fiction, both in books and movies, and to give members a chance to discuss their favorite form of literature. Many people seem to have the idea that S‑F is all monsters and invasions. We are trying to give the students of Maine West a clear picture of what S‑F is really like. We'd like to see more out for our next meeting."

The club meets on Wednesdays after school in room A‑214.
