Undefeated Gridders Whip
Downers Grove

Maine's varsity football team rolled over another foe last Friday night as they beat Downers Grove 21 to 13 at the Maine stadium. This gave Maine a clean sweep of the varsity and frosh‑soph games in its homecoming. The Blue Demons are now 4 and 0, which puts them in a tie for first place with Arlington.

Doug Schmidt scored twice for the Demons with Bill Wagner donating the other touchdown and three extra points. Eugene Smith tallied both of the losers' TDs.

Downers tried to get quick possession of the ball by trying on onside kick but were unsuccessful when Maine's Ron Martin fell on the ball at the Maine 45‑yard line.

After Maine surrendered the ball, Ed Janoski of Downers moved the ball out to the 11 before Smith plowed up to the 15. On third down the ball was handed to Gurican, who was hit behind the line of scrimmage with a tackle which jarred the ball loose. The ball bounced into the end zone where it was pounced on by Maine's Doug Schmidt for the first touchdown. Bill Wagner's extra point was perfect to make the score 7 to 0.

Downers, after three plays, surrendered the football. A five-yard loss and then a beautiful 24‑yard run by Hamman moved the ball to the 15. In two attempts Connelly plunged to the 11 from which point Kunkel hit Schmidt in the end zone. The extra point was good.

On a third down play, with the ball on the 20, quarterback Rich Coffin threw a long pass to Jim Hansen for an overall gain of 62 yards. Janoski carried the ball to the 11, where it stayed until Smith moved it to the one on fourth down. Smith then went over for the score. Ray Barnhart made the conversion.

The Demons were forced to kick from their own 24‑yard line to the Downers 36. Downers was then, also, forced to punt to the Maine 45. Maine was unable to get any long gains but grouped together a number of short ones to move the ball up to the 10. Bob Kunkel passed to Wagner who scampered into the end zone. Wagner's conversion was perfect and the half ended with Maine leading 21 to 7.

The third quarter was very slow with neither team threatening too heavily at any one time. Maine was once held deep in their own territory but Ray Peterson punted the Demons out of danger. The defenses were superb in this quarter with only a few short gains and no long yardage being picked up by the offenses of either team. Downers recovered a fumble on the Maine 13 but on the first play Dan Nehlsen of Maine recovered a Downers fumble.

Eugene Smith took a pass from quarterback Coffin on the first play of the fourth quarter for Downers Grove's second and final touchdown of the night. Barnhart's extra point attempt was wide of its mark.
