VOL. I, NO. 5
NOVEMBER 6, 1959

Remember!

Next Wednesday we will celebrate Veterans Day with no school, but how many of us realize what this holiday signifies? It was instituted after World War I to commemorate the signing of the armistice. After the second world war it was changed to Veterans Day in honor of the soldiers who died in both wars.

On this Veterans Day there is a very real possibility of a third world war in the near future. Because of the horrible effects of atomic warfare, the leading nations are doing everything to achieve peace. As teenagers we can have a big part in maintaining this peace.

For true harmony among nations is not reached only through summit meetings and peace talks, but by understanding and education. And we who are still in school have the best opportunity to obtain this education. Because of the recent emphasis on math and science, everyone is aware of the importance of these subjects. But English, languages, and the social sciences are also important. English is a tool we need to write and speak for our way of life; the languages and social sciences are necessary for an understanding of other nations, peoples, and races. Education is our best weapon against war.

As November 11 approaches, let us remember our responsibility in preventing a tragedy which might add thousands of lives to those already remembered on Veterans Day.
