Harriers Win WSC;
Look Toward State

Running like true Demons, the varsity thinclads from Maine put together their most impressive winning streak in several years, winning the conference crown, and qualifying for the state cross country meet. The harriers squeaked past Glenbard 27‑28, clinched the conference meet while gaining four blue ribbons, overpowered the Redbirds from Arlington 18‑51, and took second in state district competition behind powerful New Trier. The top seven harriers will run tomorrow at the University of Illinois.

Splashing around Glenbard's lake, Jack "Wildhorse" Kragie took third with a time of 9:25 in the 27 ‑ 28 Maine win behind La Fluer and Stinebach of Glenbard. John Jurco (9:34) held fourth, Lee Johnson (9:35) fifth, Dave Sullivan (9:51) seventh, and Frank Schwarz (9:52) eighth.

The conference meet was run through the forest preserves at Riverside, and Maine junior Jack Kragie took first with (9:20.9). Maine ended up with 41 points to second place Glenbard's 48, as Lee Johnson (9:33) held fifth, Dave Sullivan (9:36) seventh, John Jurco (9:41) ninth, and Wally Boerger (9:57) 19th.

New Trier captured first team honors in the state district competition Saturday with 31 points. Maine, had 59 taking second and thus enabling the Demons to go downstate. Weymouth Kirkland of New Trier held first with 9:52. Jack Kragie of Maine ran a near second with 9:58 as a total of 17 teams were entered.
