Maine Men Make Mark

John Wiese

The Blue Demons have been brought to their position of undefeated prominence, not by the actions of one star player, but through the balanced attack of a team working together. Eight backs on the varsity alternate playing time and all play as well as any first stringer.

Bob Kunkel is the passing and broken field running wizard at the tailback slot. Ed Swanson and Ray Peterson are usually good for a few yards around end or through the center on their carries. Dave Hammond piles up yardage on his own reverse play which he worked to perfection. Bill Wagner and Chuck Reid, starting quarterback and wingback respectively, are the hard-blocking backs who clear the field of would-be tacklers

for the other backs. Junior Keith Connelly and senior Joe Sciarra are the plunging backs, good for several yards through the middle. Connelly has piled up a lot of first downs and touchdowns by his picturesque rolling over the backs of opposing linemen.

Ahead of these backs is one of the biggest lines Maine has ever been blessed with.. Big Dan Nehlsen weighs in at 230 pounds to take top honors. Bill Spyrison and Doug Schmidt al so are past the 200 marker. The average for the entire first string line is slightly over 190 lbs.

All this and a staff of good coaches is what has made Maine a great team this year ‑ a well balanced TEAM.
