Program Accents Christmas Spirit

The spirit of Christmas will reign supreme on Friday, December 11 at 8:30 p.m. when the music department of West presents a program of Christmas music. Designed to appeal to all ages, the program will be divided into three sections, each depicting a certain type of Christmas music.

The band, under the direction of Mr. Kuite, will present a Christmas for kids including Sleigh Ride by Anderson; portions of Tschaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite including the March, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, Arabian Dance, Waltz of the Flowers, and Russian Dance; Haydn's Toy Symphony, an unusual number in the program featuring the use of toy instruments and special effects such as a cuckoo, a nightingale, a ratchet, and a quail; Toy Trumpet by Scott; and Toy Shop by Colby and Yoder, a descriptive fantasy staged in Santa's workshop.

Christmas for the family is the theme of the concert orchestra's portion of the program. Under the direction of Mrs. Heidorn, the orchestra will play Santa Claus is Comin' to Town - H. Gillespie and F. Coots, arranged by Merle Isaacs; The Christmas Suite, arranged by L. Walters; A Christmas Festival, arranged by Leroy Anderson; Overture to Christmas Cantata - Johann S. Bach, arranged by Harvey Gaul; and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring - J. S. Bach, arranged by D. Walter.
