Runners Take Sixth Place

Maine's cross country finalists, under the coaches William Barringer and Randy Pitts, ran to sixth place finish in the state meet at Urbana on the Country Club course. The Harriers ran against the 19 top teams in the state.

New Trier captured team honors with 67 points, and Glenbard took second with 96 points. Maine, who had twice previously beaten Glenbard, was sixth with 159 points.

Jack "Wildhorse" Kragie was the first Maine finisher, taking third in the state, behind Kirkland of New Trier and Carius of Morton. John Jurco took 15th for Maine, Lee Johnson 25th, Dave Sullivan 47th, John Garver 67th, Wally Boerger 95th, and Jerry Romes 131st.

Through the rain and mud, the Harriers finished their unbeaten conference season at Riverside‑Brookfield. The Harriers walloped RB 16‑53, as Jack Kragie led for Maine with a time of 9:59.

The thinclads finished in a driving downpour running down a track under an inch and a half of water, as Maine runners (10:08), Dave Sullivan (10:11), John Garver (10:13), Bill Russell (10:17), Stu Shakman (10:18), and Jerry Romes (10:20) held seven, of the remaining places in the top 10.

Lettermen Jack Kragie, Dave Sullivan, John Garver, Wally Boerger, and John Hinds will return to Maine next year. Lettermen returning to the Warriors will be Paul Eisenbacher and Frank Schwartz.

The baby Blue Demons finished their dual meet season with only one loss, by rolling over Riverside 16‑59. Larry Martin held first for Maine with 10:40. John Murray, Al Ralph, Jim French, Bruce Berlet, Dale Peterson, Mike Blodgett, Scott Dunlap, and J. Brooks Buderus swept all the rest but one of the 10 top places.
