The Governor announced recently the names of semi‑finalists in the selection of 1960 Illinois College Scholarship award winners. MTHSW has 26 students who have made the semifinals. They are on a list of 4,438 names narrowed down from the original 20,874 who took the scholarship exam last Nov. 7.
Maine West's semi‑finalists are Tom Baker, Ross Bertone, Barb Clark, Gary Coxon, Bev Foss, Dave Fouth, Stan Gembicki, Bev Gunderson, Al Harazin, Mary Hills, Dick Hoglund, Jay Jenni, Bill Julitz, Gertrude McNeal, Jerry Mohr, Carl Nichols, Andrea Ouse, Bob Pawelko, Bill Priebe, Janice Reid, Tom Richardson, Bill Weaver, Bill Wegner, Pat Weretka, John Wiese, and Dave Williamson.
$600 Awarded
Under this program, deserving high school graduates may receive up to $600 from the state for tuition and fees at the college of their choice. Winners may attend any of the 72 approved colleges and universities in Illinois and may enter whatever field of study they choose. State scholarships are renewable for a period of four years.

"This scholarship plan," Governor Stratton explained, "has proved its worth a hundredfold already because it has afforded high education to those who may not othewise have received it. Also, it has acted as a stimulus for private colleges and universities who carry fully half of the college load in Illinois. I congratulate the semifinalists and wish them luck."
Some scholarships will be granted to students who have met all qualifications, but do not need financial aid. No distinction between monetary and honorary winners will be made when the finalists are publicly announced.
1500 Winners to be Named
It is expected that approximately 1,500 monetary winners will be named early this March. In the past two years the average award to monetary winners has amounted to $400 per year.
As was true in previous years, semi‑finalists will be required to submit further evidence of their qualifications to receive a state award. In addition to asking the applicant himself for further information, the high school will be asked for a report on the student and the parents will be asked to submit a statement of their financial circumstances.
Applications were due January 10, 1960.
