WMTH Born 8 Years Ago

Swampfox was born eight years ago when Mr. Theron Whitfield, industrial arts instructor, came to Maine High School to teach electronics.

It was 1957 before the idea gained momentum. It was at this time that Dick Allen and John Setzer, Student Council members sparked the idea. Mr. Otto Kohler, social science department chairman, also became interested in the project. It was Mr. Kohler who helped choose a name for the project which was yet far from becoming a reality. "Francis Marion," a general during the Revolution period, was first suggested as a name because of the initials FM. His nickname "Swamp Fox," however, was decided upon to serve the purpose even better.

After a year and a hail of research, the project was sent to the administration for approval. Next it was passed on to the school board. At this time, Maine West was being planned, and the board felt that it would wait until the new school was completed.

Mr. Honn is Director

In June, 1959, equipment for the new station was ordered. Finally, under the direction of Mr. Keith Honn, social science instructor at Maine, Swamp Fox is in full operation at the beginning of this year.

Today at 88.5 on FM the third school radio station in Illinois and can be heard every night, Monday through Saturday, from 6:30 to 9 p. m.
