Debaters Win In Area Meet

Maine West's debaters, along with 39 other suburban high schools from this area attended the cross exam debate at Northwestern university on January 15 and 16. The club debated on the proposition: That the federal government should regulate and increase its control over the labor unions. The Maine West debaters went ahead to win two debates, one for the affirmative team and one for the negative team.

Points are given on the basis of how the debaters distinguish the major facts on the proposition. If the debater wins the match, he receives a rating of two to nine points, even if he loses, the debater still receives two points. These points accumulate until the club has 200 points, which gives it the right for membership in the National Forensic league.

Maine West's club lost a meet to Proviso West High school on December 4. Their first two meets were with Evanston and La Grange. The members of the affirmative team are Carol Barrett, freshman; Celeste Stachnik, junior; and Richard Giles and Carla Steinborn, both freshmen. The members of the negative team are Jim Moyer, Carl Jefferson, Craig Seitz, and John Saari, all sophomores.

The Debate club's next meets are at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, on January 29 and 30.

Miss Harriet Johnson, the club sponsor explained, "Our club has all new debaters this year, and with one year's experience we will be tough to beat next year."
