Varsity Cindermen Slaughter Tigers

Burning up the track in their flashy gold uniforms, the Warrior cindermen were almost as hot as their track suits, as they massacred the Austin Tigers, 74 1/5 to 25 4/5 before a home crowd at the Maine East fieldhouse last Friday. Tonight the Warriors will travel to Oak Park to take on the powerful Huskies and two other schools, hoping to continue their winning ways.

Helping along in the decisive victory were 10 first places for the Maine West squad. Junior Howie Franzen never missed a step as he hurdled to a :07.0 clocking and a first place in the 50‑yard high hurdles. Senior Tom Neill then came on in the 440‑yard dash to win it in the brisk time of :54.5. Frank Schwartz, junior, continued West Maine's winning ways as he raced to a victory in the 880‑yard run with a 2:11.2 timing. The 50‑yard low hurdle event was captured by junior Ed Luzietti in :06.6.

First place in the mile run went to junior Ed Stedman as he took the 10 laps in 5:00.2. Senior John Charles threw the 12 lb. shot, 47 feet, 1 5/8 inches to take another first for the Warriors. Junior Art Steele's vault of 11 feet was high enough to win the pole vault. Steele then tied juniors Dennis Buttner and Chuck Badalamenti, and senior Leonard Lundgren at 5 feet, 1/2 inch for first place in the high jump.

Both the four lap relay and the eight lap relay teams for Maine West took first with excellent clockings. Junior Ron Albertson, senior Bob Swanberg, and Harry Hansen each ran one lap as they were timed in 1:20.1. Senior Joe Juszak teamed up with Schwartz, Hansen, and Neill as they walked away from the Austin quartet in 2:52.6.
