'Westerner' Asserts Editorial Policy

The objectives of the Westerner include the following: To reflect the Maine West philosophy as worded in the Maine Way. To report school news and feature other articles which the Westerner deems pertinent. To provide a common means of communication for indi­viduals at Maine West. To recognize achievement. To promote responsible journalism. To provide experience in newswriting and organization.

The position of the Westerner on various subjects is stated below.

1. The Westerner will not print articles directly denouncing a specific individual or institution.

2. The Westerner will attempt to give equal coverage to the various clubs, sports, and activities at Maine West. We reserve the right, however, to determine the length of coverage.

3. The Westerner welcomes letters of comments, criticism, or suggestions. Only signed letters will be considered for print. Names will be withheld upon request.

4. The Westerner will feature articles which we consider to be of general interest to our readers. Articles will be by‑lined at the discretion of the editors or sponsor.

5. The Westerner will print responsible editorials of recognition, pointing out the good or bad facets of the subject, based on research. All editorials will reflect the views of the Westerner, unless stated otherwise by means of a by‑line or other explanatory statement.

6. The Westerner will feature personalities whom we feel deserving of recognition.

7. The Westerner welcomes the submission of articles, editorials, or literary items by any reader. Such selections must be signed and must conform to the editorial policy.

8. The Westerner is fully responsible for everything appearing in the paper. Retractions will be made if necessary.
