Frosh‑Soph Squad Joins Cheerleaders

The new frosh‑soph cheerleading squad has been announced. The new cheerleaders are Sandy Beyer '72, Sue Black '71, Carol Gigante '72, Jenny Jobst '72, Rita Nelson '71, and Jill Wetham '71.

Sixty girls tried out on September 12. The clinics were held on September 9, 10, and 11. The 25 finalists competed on September 13.

The judges were Miss Janice Richter, sponsor of cheerleaders; the senior varisty cheerleaders; president of Boys' Club, and Randy Hann, president of Student Council.

The members of the junior varsity squad were chosen at the end of last year. These girls include Betsy Huxmann '70, captain; Bev Drews '71, cocaptain; Roxy Doremus '71, Cheryl Jaeschke '71, Donna Mertes '71, and Diane Sachetti '71.

The members of the varsity cheerleading squad were also chosen at the end of last year. The members include Eileen Goelz 69, captain; Katie Mandell '69, co‑captain; Toey Belzer '69, Jan Bobernac '69, Pat Cordts '69, Chris Clausen '70, Dorrie Johnson '70, and Cathy Leer '70.

The varsity cheerleaders and junior varsity cheerleaders attended camp at Lake Geneva on July 20, 21, 22, and 23. The purpose of the camp was for the cheerleaders to learn new stunts and cheers, to show the Maine West cheers and stunts, and to allow the cheerleaders to have a good time while learning.

The varsity squad won two awards while the girls were at the camp. The girls won a trophy for the best impvovement. They also won a ribbon for second place.

Katie Mandell, co‑captain of varsity cheerleaders, stated, "Our squad really enjoyed cheerleading camp this year. We learned many new cheers which we will be using throughout the year."

The cheerleaders this year hope to foster school spirit as well as good sportsmanship
