The Maine West cross country team's first meet of the 1968 season was the Crystal Lake Multiple Meet. The Harriers finished third with 84 points. Evanston came in first with a team total of 27; the second place team, Proviso West, followed closely with a 32.
Fourth place went to Rockford‑Guilford whose final tally was 90. The host team took fifth with a 37 total, and sixth place went to Grant which totaled 170.
The season's first dual meet can be chalked up as a victory for the Maine West Harriers. Tuesday, September 14, the Harriers chewed up the Elk Grove forest preserve course to beat that school's team 18 to 44.
Finishing first over the grassy, winding course was Maine's Bob Glitz who clocked a 13.28. Close behind Bob was Mike Wolf of Maine West. Mike picked up second with 13.34. Elk Grove's first runner in was Wille who took third and was clocked in at 13.47.
Fourth through seventh places were all taken by Maine West runners. Fourth was Steve Johnson 14:03, followed by Jack Wallin in fifth with 14:04; sixth was Daryl Jonasson at 14:07. Jerry Krainick placed seventh with 14:14.

Ninth and tenth places also went to Maine West with Al Schank ninth at 14:18 and Gary Wolf tenth with 14:21. Bachus of Elk Grove finished eighth with a 14:15.
The combined freshmen and sophomore Maine West team also downed Elk Grove Tuesday 19 to 44. Maine West's Scott Gyssler placed first being clocked at 14:34. Following closely was Elk Grove's Ottinger who finished second with a 14:59.
The official results for the meet go as follows: Gyssler of Maine West first, 14:34; Elk Grove's Ottinger second, 14:59; Maine's Wright third, 15:10; Fritscher of Maine West, fourth, 15:13; fifth, Maine West's Kovar, 15:17; Watkins of Maine West, sixth, 15:38; seventh, Maine's Acherman, 16:00; Maine West's Backes, 16:02 for eighth place; Gilbertson of Maine West ninth, 16:05; and tenth, Elk Grove's Bachus, 16:06.
For the fourth year Maine West has hosted and won their Center Meet. Maine with 303 beat the closest of the 23 competing schools by 161/2 points.
