Continuing to promote school spirit again this year will be Pep Club. Last week membership was opened to students, and officers were elected. The first Pep Club meeting will be October 11. Spirit representatives were also chosen last week in homeroom. On October 4 the Spirit Senate will hold their first meeting.
Sue Winn, president of Pep Club, urges all members and non‑members to participate and show enthusiasm. According to Sue, Pep Club is "hoping for more encouragement from M Club this year." In preparation for homecoming, plans are being made for a float.
On November 23 the Northern Illinois Pep Club Workshop will be held here at Maine. Already foreseen are the basketball afterdances and the annual spring sports dance.
This season the Maine West Warriors are making an effort to become a winning team with the double handicap of size and inexperience. Head Coach Ken Olson is still optimistic over the Warriors' chances of winning some ball games. "It might take a little longer to get that first win, but it will come."
Coach Olson believes that in order for the team to come up with a victory they must put two elements together. First, the gridmen must take advantage of every mistake the opponents make and then not commit any of their own. One factor that the Warriors do have going for them, Coach Olson admitted, is "their great determination and spirit."

Returning lettermen this year include Tom Mietus, Gene Behrens, Jim Morrison, Tom Buttncr, Rich Yetter, Jerry Kaminski, Dave Zulawski, and John Salerno.
Coach Bill Barringer is looking for another successful year from his cross country team. The Maine West harriers find themselves adjusting to the loss of state champion Lee LaBadie through graduation. In his place are returning lettermen Bob Glitz and Mike Wolf who have been finishing one, two respectively in competition.
This season the standard conference race has been lengthened from two miles to 2 3/4 miles. The increase, however, only applies to the varsity team. Frosh‑soph races will remain at two miles.
On September 14 the harriers turned in an impressive performance at the annual Center Meet held here at Maine West. According to Coach Barringer the fact that the Warriors took first place in wide competition is a good indication of a bright future for the cross country team. In conference Maine South once again looms as a tough opponent while Deerfield, who did not participate in the Center Meet, could also provide tough competition.
