On February 22 the Freshman Class held their first PTC party. Nearly 500 freshmen and their parents enjoyed the many activities and sports available to them from 7 to 10 p.m. in Maine West's cafeteria and gyms.
Many Freshman students danced to the music of the "New York Sound Exchange" in the cafeteria while others played volleyball, swam, or roller skated. Both A‑wing and C‑wing gyms were open for the students' use. Parents entertainment consisted of bridge, pinochle, or canasta games.
Between 9 and 10 o'clock the combo moved to the gym and played for the roller skaters, while refreshments were served in the cafeteria.

The freshmen were able to make their own ice cream sundaes with cherries, strawberries, bananas, nuts, chocolate, butterscotch, and marshmallows at a mini‑snack bar in the cafeteria.
Parents were invited to make a $2 donation to take care of party expenses. Remaining money went to the Freshman Class treasury.
The four Freshman Class officers, Ken Steinken, president; Jeff Hoke, vice‑president; J0 Dee Rowels, treasurer; and Kathy Jordan, secretary, worked very hard in order to present a most enjoyable program.
According to Mr. Harvey Kelber, Freshman Class sponsor, "This was an opportunity for students to get to know their parents a little better on an informal basis."
