The National Honor Society celebrated the initiation of its new members Wednesday, March 5, at the annual National Honor Society Tea. Recently elected were 91 seniors and 32 juniors.
The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students.
In order to be elected, a senior must stand in the first quarter of his class in scholarship; he must also have spent the seventh and eighth semesters at Maine West. Not more than 15 per cent may be elected. Nominees, in addition, must have at least a 3. average and have taken no less than four full‑credit courses in each of their seven semesters.
Not more than five per cent of the junior class may be elected. Junior class eligibility maintains that no grade below a B is used in computing class rank.
This year's National Honor Society officers include: Steve Baenziger '69, president; Donna Ellwanger '69, vice-president; Darlene Fricano '69, treasurer; and Beth Miller '69, secretary.
Darlene Fricano '69 was the committee chairman for the tea. Other committee chairmen were Steve Baenziger '69, publicity; Janet Moranz '69, hospitality; Donna Ellwanger '69, refreshments; and Nancy Lilja '69, entertainment.
The newly elected seniors are William Adair, Patricia Anderson, Nancy Atkinson, Robert Aulert, Ronald Baker, Adrianna Baldassi, Barbara Bednarz, Barbara Billings, Gail Blaha, Sandra Brogmus, Richard Brown, Richard Buchanan and Mary Ann Budzon.
Others are Patricia Carson, Penny Chase, Diane Clarke, Marilyn Coombs, Donna De Franco, Richard Didier, Susan Dixon, Philip Doyle, Craig Dudczak, Susan Ehnert, Susan Evans, Gary Fairhead, Linda Felke, Elizabeth Feltmann, Gladys Frank, and Diane Franzen.
