Three Gymnasts Help End 1968‑69 Season on High Note

On March 7 and 8 the Maine West gymnastics team traveled to West Leyden for the District Meet. Although no Warriors could place in the State Finals on March 15, three boys placed high in the district.

Jim Janssens '69 was the big winner for Maine as he took first place on the high bar with 7.75 points. Bob Moehling '69 took fifth place on the sidehorse when he came up with 6.95 points. Rich Didier '69 earned 7.95 points with his routine, but it was only good enough to place seventh on the parallel bars.

With these three places, the Warriors placed sixth out of a total of 16 schools in the district.

The District Meet ended the 1968‑69 season for the Maine West gymnasts. This year was strictly to be a rebuilding year for the Warriors; but as the season progressed, they came on strong and defeated both Niles West and Niles North. The gymnasts proved themselves when they defeated Hersey and almost upset Waukegan, who are both ranked high in the state.

According to Coach Drain, "We had a lot of bad breaks this year, but we did have a successful season. At one point in the season five of our six regulars were out with injuries."

When asked about next season the head coach commented, "If this year's juniors work hard during the off‑season, I expect another good season next year."
