National Honor Society
Sponsors Initiation

The formal initiation of the National Honor Society students will be held in the Maine West auditorium tonight at 8 p.m.

Dr. Richard Short, superintendent of schools, will deliver a speech pertaining to the National Honor Society. Miss Anne Lauterbach, sponsor of the society, and Mr. Herman L. Rider, principal, will be present.

The program will consist of four student speakers, whose topics will be based on the necessary characteristics for obtaining membership. These speakers will be Kurt Krebs '69, leadership; Janice Thain '69, character; Sandy Lauffenberger '69, scholarship; and Jim Sorensen '69, service. Steve Baenziger '69, president of the society, will preside as master of ceremonies.

The initiates will receive pins and cards which will be presented to them by Donna Ellwanger '69, Darlene Fricano '69, and Beth Miller '69.

National Honor Society members wear gold tossels at graduation.

A reception will be held in the cafeteria after the ceremony.

The initiates for the National Honor Society are chosen from those seniors who have a "B" average. Then they are rated by the faculty in the areas of character, leadership, and service. In order for a junior to be acceptable to the National Honor Society, he must be in the upper five per cent of his class.
