For the past few years, the student body here at Maine has highly criticized the effectiveness of the Student Council, and for the first time we have had the chance to voice our opinions. We, the students of Maine West, have put a new Student Council constitution into effect.
Since plan "B" was chosen, this means that a majority of students want people in their own homerooms to represent them, not students chosen on a popularity basis. By choosing representatives in this way, we are able to elect students whom we know are qualified, simply because they have been our classmates and we have a good idea of whether or not they have the required leadership abilities.

This plan also solves the communication problem, because the representatives will be in homerooms every day to give reports and answer questions whenever a student might think of one.
Because a new system is hard to adjust to and become acquainted with, it takes time and effort to make it effective. The new constitution is by no means going to make Student Council a flawless organization, but it certainly is a step in the right direction. All students should be willing to withhold judging the new constitution until a reasonable length of time for testing it has elapsed.
