This year's National Honor Society president, Steve Baenziger, is considered by many as one of Maine West's most outstanding students.
In addition to being a member of National Honor Society for the past two years, Steve has been active in Brotherhood Society, Presidents Council, and Math Club. Maintaining an "A" average all four years, Steve is the number one senior scholar. He received the highest score in Maine West's annual math contest which earned him a membership in Mu Alpha Theta, an honorary mathematics society.
Steve would like to continue his education at Harvard, but is considering Brown as a possible substitute. He intends to study bio‑chemistry with his ultimate goal being the prevention of world hunger.
Upon further questioning about his goal, Steve replied, "In Biafra people are dying by the millions. I read a book that stated 'while you're reading this, three of four people are dying of hunger.' " He feels that that is enough to motivate anybody.
Volley‑dodge ball, a game he helped to invent and organize, is one of his favorite sports. Although this game got off to a slow start, it is gaining popularity among his friends.
Steve's greatest moment occurred when the San Francisco Giants had runners on first and third and hexed them to prevent them from scoring.
When asked about education, he answered, "A student has to rely on himself part of the time to maintain his interest. You've got to want an education and have an aim."

Steve Waecker is a 5'10" senior who favors girls, pizza, and sitting in the left field bleachers at Wrigley Field. Steve profoundly prophesies that "the Cubs will shine in '69." Fergie Jenkins and Ernie Banks rank among the greats on the Cubs roster, according to him.
"Sports teach you everything," asserted the brown-haired, green‑eyed wrestler. "It's just like life. You have to keep trying and pushing." During his high school career Steve has participated in both football and wrestling and has earned his varsity letter in each.
In addition to sports Steve had served Maine as an active Member of Student Council. This year he took on the responsibility of organizing and running the campaign of one of the candidates for secretary.
Steve feels the ratification of the new constitution is the best thing that has ever happened to Council. In his opinion there will undoubtedly be confusion at first, but it will eventually give the students more power.
As a child he got his thrills out of driving his tractor full speed into a solid brick wall and sinking toy cars in the mud.
"The students at Maine are the greatest," he commented, "and they should be given as many privileges as possible because the majority have proven that they are responsible enough to handle them."
Finally, Steve has no use for in school suspension. "It's ridiculous! You miss a day of school so they make you miss another?"
