The 1969 Maine West baseball team has gotten off to a fine start. As of Monday, the Warrior's record is 5‑1, with the lone setback coming at the hands of Oak Park in their third outing
The diamondmen started the season with a 2‑0 win over the Morton West Falcons. Gary Heist '69 and Bill Olsen '70 combined for the shutout. Junior Jim Kulik provided all the firepower with his two r.b.i.'s.
The Prospect Knights were the next opponents the Warriors faced, and again they captured a victory. Ken Dopp '70 and Bert Gastorf '70 split the pitching chores as sophomores Keith Moranz and Jim Hanselman supplied the hitting. The final score showed Maine on top 4‑2.
Against Oak Park, the Warriors faced a pitcher who gained all-state honors last season, and the best they could manage was one run. The Huskies scored late in the ball game to edge Maine 2-1. Gary Heist and Bill Olsen again pitched for the Warriors.

Coach Al Carstens' varsity nine rebounded from their loss as they pounded the host Evanston Wildkits 6‑2. Three juniors, Bill Olsen, Bert Gastorf, and Ken Dopp, shared the pitching as Doug Keehn '70 and Gastorf provided the hitting.
This past Monday the varsity Warriors opened conference play with a game against the Nile North Vikings. The game had been postponed earlier because of rain, but the later date proved no barrier to the diamondmen as they pounded out a 5‑4 victory. Jim Hanselman '71 and Jim Kulik '70 sparked the hitting attack as Kulik drove in the tie‑breaking run late in the game.
The thing one notices about this year's varsity is the abundance of underclassmen in the line‑up; there are only two seniors in starting positions. A pair of sophomores form the keystone‑combination at second and shortstop, while juniors fill in the rest of the positions.
