The Maine West varsity tennis team is off to a fine start as they have taken a first in the Maine West Invitational and beaten Prospect by a score of 4‑1. In their opening meet with Niles East, the Warriors were victimized by a score of 4‑1.
Maine West won its own quadrangular tennis meet by a margin of three points. Hosting Lake Park, Homewood‑Flossmore, and Hersey, the Warriors dominated the competition by taking four of the six singles division championships and two of the three doubles confrontations for a total of 20 points.
In the second singles competition Warrior Dave Keehn '70 swept Lake Park's Cal Behrens in two straight matches with scores of 6‑3, 6‑2.
Warrior Jack Williams '70 opened third singles play with a 9‑7 decision over Fred DeWitt of Homewood‑Flossmore but later fell 6‑8, 6‑3.
Maine then proceeded to win the last four singles matches as Tom Tyler '69 defeated Lake Park's Chuck Zahara 6‑1, 4‑6, 6‑4. Warrior Ron Finstad '70 then proceeded to oust Lake Park's Eric Udd in two straight sets 6‑1, 6‑4. Tim Wayman '70 ended the singles scoring for the Warriors with a convincing 6‑1, 7‑5 sweep against Rick Matasar of Homewood‑Flossmore.

In the second doubles competition two of Maine's previous winners, Tyler and Finstad, teamed up to defeat Lake Park's entry of Scott Werner and Chuck Zahara. In the final doubles competition of the day Maine came out with first place honors as Tim Wayman '70 and Bill Ritchie '69 combined forces against Lake Park's John Friedlund and Eric Udd. It was no contest as the West boys defeated them by a score of 6‑1, 6‑4. The final team standings were Maine West 20 points, Lake Park 17, Homewood‑Flossmore 10, and Hersey 6.
Against Prospect Drake Mertes '69 dropped his opening singles match to Prospect's Dave Johnson 6‑0, 6‑4, but Warrior Dave Keehn '70 stopped the Prospect Assault with a 6‑4, 6‑1 triumph in second singles action.
Jack Williams continued Maine West's offensive with a 7‑5, 6‑4 win in the third singles event over Prospect's Bob Brule.
In doubles competition Ron Finstad and Tom Tyler combined for a 6‑0, 6‑3 win against Prospect's McIntosh and Witt. In second doubles Tim Wayman and Bill Ritchie battled back from a 3‑6 first round score to register a 9‑7, 6‑4 performance against Brian Baumback and Jack Sales of Prospect.
On Saturday Maine West played host to Forest View and Maine East.
