MW Observes Law Day

On May 1, Maine West observed its annual celebration of Law Day. Two assemblies were conducted in the auditorium by attorney Michael D. Sullivan, with several other lawyers discussing the topic of students' rights.

The general discussion arose from an incident involving the wearing of black armbands by students demonstrating against the war in Viet Nam. The school administration felt justified in curbing such attire, in that they said it disrupted "the normal function of the University." The students claimed that such restraint was the seizure of democratic rights.

Several attorneys argued the case before the social science classes who attended the assemblies. They presented in detail both sides to the argument and later let students from the audience present questions pertinent to the matter.

Law Day is observed annually and was instituted during President Dwight D. Eisenhower's term of office.
