Outstanding U.S. history students will be honored on May 15 at the History Honors Tea. Mr. Dewane Barnes is the sponsor and person in charge of all arrangements for the tea.
At the tea, to be held in L‑106 the 30 highest scoring students on an objective test will be given awards. In addition, the student who scores a combination of highest on the test and best on an essay test will get a $25 savings bond.
This student will also receive a special medal from the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). Mr. Barnes stressed that this award is separate from the annual DAR‑SAR awards. Those awards are given to one girl and one boy from Maine West whom the DAR‑SAR feel have displayed good citizenship.
The tests, which will determine the winners of these awards, will be given in C‑201 on May 8. Any junior who is currently taking U.S. history or who took this course in summer school this last summer is eligible to take the tests.

The test will cover United States history from the colonization of the states through the Spanish‑American War.
Also at this tea the winners of this year's Boy's State will be announced. Three of the boys who applied for the trip will be elected to go. These boys will go down to Springfield, Illinois, for one week beginning June 22 where they will participate in a mock legislature for one week.
This annual trip for three representatives from Maine West is sponsored and paid for by the DAR and the Illinois branch of the American Legion.
At the tea the highest scorers will be initiated into Maine West's Historical Society, as is done every year.
These objective U.S. history tests have been administered here for a number of years to determine who will be awarded at the History Honors Tea. Last year's recipient of the $25 bond was Scott Ferraiolo '69.
