Art Department To Hold First
Annual Kite Contest

The kite brigade will invade Maine West when the first annual Kite Festival takes place on Saturday, May 24. This event is sponsored by the Art Department and is the first of its kind to be held at Maine West.

The kite contest is open to all students, teachers, and organizations. A $.75 entry fee will be charged to insure a position in the competition and to help sponsor the event.

The festival will begin at 1 p.m. between the football field and baseball diamond. Judging will take place at 2 p.m.

The kites will be judged on design, originality, craftsmanship, and flight possibilities. Prizes will be given to first, second, and third place winners.

The first place winner will have his name or organization name engraved on a two‑foot trophy. This trophy will remain in the Art Department on a permanent basis and will list the winners of the festival each year. Smaller awards will be presented to the prize winners.

The kites submitted must be original in design, and they must be able to fly 200‑300 feet in order to qualify for a prize. No more than two people may assist in flying the kite which includes the designer.

There is no limitation on size or materials which can be used. No motors or devices will be accepted, however; and no balloons may be used.

Suggested materials for the kite frame include reed, balsa wood, light weight pine, and bamboo. It may be covered in tissue paper, silk organza, cotton voile, or organza.

Posters for the Kite Festival may be purchased for $.25. These posters have been made by the art students and are very original and attractive in design.
