Golfers Beat State Champs,
Triumph Over Deerfield

With a 3‑1 conference record thus far, the Maine West varsity golf team appears to be a threat for the conference title. Led by their only returning letterman, Bob Edwards '70, the stickmen have defeated Maine South, Glenbrook South, and Niles North.

Against the Maine South Hawks, Edwards was low man with a 39. He was followed by sophomores Randy Getsla with a 41 and Gary Navratil who shot a 42. Junior Ed Duchaj took the fourth spot for the varsity with his 44 over the first nine holes at the Park Ridge Country Club.

The Warriors next meet was against last year's state champions, the Glenbrook South Titans. The meet was held at West's home course, Golden Acres in Roselle; and the stickmen captured a seven stroke victory. Randy Getsla '71 was low man with his 41, while Bob Edwards, Tom Navratil '69, and Gary Navratil '71 shot 45, 46, and 47 respectively.

The Warriors lost their first conference meet to Deerfield by 14 strokes. Ed Duchaj '70 was the top Maine shooter, and he was followed by Getsla, Edwards, and Tom Navratil.

Maine bounced back from the Deerfield meet with an 18‑stroke romp over the Niles North Vikings. Scores of 37, 40, and a pair of 42's were recorded by Getsla, Duchaj, Edwards, and Navratil.

In non‑conference competition the golfers are still seeking their first win. The varsity lost to Arlington and Wheeling by two strokes. Downers Grove South also defeated the Warriors in a non‑conference meet.

Today the varsity golfers are competing in the District Golf Tournament in Skokie.
