Warriors Nip Niles, Shutout Deerfield

Coach Carsten's diamondmen have found it rough going thus far in the campaign, but last Thursday they broke out of their slump by beating Deerfield 1‑0.

The Warriors relied heavily on the pitching of Mike Kautz '69 who hurled a three‑hitter and extended his unscored upon streak to nine innings. Maine's only hit came off the bat of Jim Kulik '70 in the last inning, but he was stranded there.

West scored the only run of the game when Joe Jung '70 was hit by the first pitch of the game. Jim Hanselman '71 walked, and Kulik hit a grounder to third for the force. The relay was thrown over the first baseman's head as a result of Jung's cross‑body block into the third baseman, allowing the run to score.

On April 21 the Warriors climaxed their 5‑4 win over Niles North with a four run seventh inning. West bunched four of their 11 hits in the final frame after Niles had picked up three runs in the sixth.

Doug Keehn '70 led off the last inning with a single. Bert Gastorf '70 also singled, and one out later Hanselman batted in two runs with a double. Kulik broke the tie with a run‑scoring single.

Maine scored three runs in the final frame to tie Niles West on April 23, but the Indians picked up a run in their half of the inning to salvage a 5‑4 win over the Warriors.

Kevin Weller '69 was hit for three runs in the second inning, but he settled down and pitched two hitless innings.

The big seventh began with a Doug Keehn single to center. After Jim Doherty '69 rapped a pinch‑hit single to center, Joe Jung walked to fill the bases.

Jim Kulik and Jim Hanselman were safe on fielder's choices, both producing runs. The tying run came in on a wild pitch by Niles pitcher Paul Sortal. Two errors and two sacrifice flies cost the Warriors the game in the bottom half of the inning.

On April 27 the diamondmen lost to the Spartans of Glenbrook North, 6‑1. The only run for West came in on a single by Bert Gastorf in the fourth inning.

Two days later the Warriors were no‑hit by Glenbrook South. Dave Winn '69 was the only Maine base runner, although the Warriors did connect a number of times.

Maine yielded six runs in the fourth inning to the Hawks of Maine South. as they were defeated 8‑1. West scored its only run in the last inning when Bill Olsen '70 and Jim Doherty walked. One out later Olsen came in on a sacrifice fly.
