MW Council Wraps Up Tenth Successful Year

This year Student Council members and officers have been busy working on many projects.

One of the first big projects of the year was the planning of Homecoming. Council took care of planning the parade, announcing the queen and her court, and planning the Homecoming dance.

Student Council's second project was Maine West's annual V‑Show. Work on this began in September because of the early November dates for the show. Council made a profit of almost $2,000 on this year's show.

Other annual projects Student Council sponsored were the sale of Dial Tones, Maine West's student telephone directory, and activity calendars.

November 20 was Teacher Appreciation Day. Student Council gave each teacher an apple and carnation to show their appreciation.

In order to comprehend the causes of student dissatisfaction with Student Council, forms were distributed in homeroom so the students could express their opinions. An evaluation committee then met to try and solve the student complaints.

Student Council again sponsored a "Breakfast With the Brass" this year. Attendance was open to anyone who had a first period study hall. The students and faculty met over breakfast to become better acquainted on an informal basis.

Council was successful in selling donuts in the mornings. It is hoped they will be able to continue next year.

Student Council Election Week was a very important event. The candidates campaigned by passing out flyers and buttons. During homeroom assemblies speeches were given, and finally the students voted. The results of the elections were announced at the Election Jitney.

One of Student Council's biggest projects was the writing and adoption of a new constitution. The constitution provides for a two‑house system of student government. It is hoped that this system will provide for better communications between the student body and the Student Council.

Randy Hann '69, this year's Student Council president, commented, "Needless to say, we had a lot of problems, but we still had kids who wanted to work.

"At the start of the year we were very successful in the projects we took on. Our greatest asset was the constitution. The greatest part about it is that the kids knew it might cost them positions for next year, but they knew we needed it so they passed it. Overall, I think we had a good year."
